Online Poker Player Types: the Casual Chatter

Like the chatterboxes you sometimes will find yourself seated next to in a live poker casino, there are online poker players that seem to use their poker time as social hour, even on the internet. Often these players will end up slowing down the game because they are busy using the open forum connected to their poker table as a chatbox. When this causes them to time out every hand around, it can be supremely irritating, enough to make you want to switch tables. The kind of chat that goes on in these forums varies from trash talk to buddy buddy type catching up. Two poker buddies who have gotten to know each other online might use the space to catch up how their recent cash game results have gone, or how deep they’ve reached in the current tournament. It is easy as clicking ‘mute’ on these players, or on the chat as a whole, to tune them out if they are irritating, but if they speed affects the game, it’s not good. Other online poker players will use the chatbox to whine when they’ve been sucked out, or to talk trash to players they think aren’t “playing the way they should.” I usually am able to turn my eyes away from these kinds of players, but don’t usually turn their chat off, as sometimes their speaking can lead to a tell as to what they hold in a hand.
