Vodafone Signs Deals with Record Companies for DRM Free Music
A large number of people now want to download music from the internet and use it on multiple devices; however, DRM restrictions turn out to be a major roadblock for such users. DRM or Digital Rights Management is a type of protective measure that prohibits users from sharing a file and using it on multiple devices. The purpose of DRM is tackling online music piracy, but as legitimate users themselves find the system hard to use, it is in fact driving people away from legal music download.
Vodafone has now offered an innovative solution to the problem. The company has signed deals with major record labels such as Universal Music, EMI and Sony Music so that its customers can download their music DRM free, and use it on an unlimited number of devices. For those who already have music from these companies in the WMA format, conversions to MP3 without DRM restrictions are available free of cost.
Vodafone is the first global telecom provider to come up with such a deal, and it believes that this will be extremely beneficial for customers, who can now access their favourite music on any device, anytime and anywhere. Director of Vodafone Internet Services, Pieter Knook, while speaking on this initiative mentioned that music is an important part of everyone’s lives today, and thus DRM free music on mobile phones and MP3 music on PCs are in great demand. Therefore, it is important to allow users to enjoy music without device restrictions, and that is exactly what the company will achieve through this deal.
