Artificial Intelligent Birds

Currently there is much research and development and prototype testing of unmanned aerial vehicles. They’re getting smaller in size and more robust and features. Today our unmanned aerial vehicles are loaded with a myriad of sensors including; radar, lidar, sonar, infrared, etc.

Indeed, with all this research and monies been channeled in the direction of unmanned aerial vehicles we have noticed that the sensors and equipment in order to provide these functions of autonomous flight are getting smaller. In fact, there are now leading researchers who are building unmanned aerial vehicles the size of a hummingbird, which have three axis autopilots and all the sensors mentioned above.

Does this mean we can build artificially intelligent birds capable of autonomous flight? Capable of learning to maneuver them selves based on wind flow and speed or direction of travel or manipulating their position in the relative wind? Indeed so. But what will we use these artificially intelligent birds for? Could we use them to help steer potentially infected birds with bird flu or West Nile virus away from our cities?

Obviously, there are many military applications for surveillance as well as applications in policing. The future of artificially intelligent birds is nearly upon us. It is a bird or plane? It’s super bird. Consider this in 2006.

Scanning And Printing Services

There are establishments that undertake both printing as well as scanning. Scanning means professionally processing the pictures you have included in your layout for printing. Scanning for professional printing is done at high resolutions of 1500 dpi or more. This ensures that the pictures are printed life-like and of high quality.

Before you even approach a printing or scanning service you need to know clearly what are known as the specifications of your job. These include: how many black and white images, how many color images, if color, what level of quality, the size of pictures, bleeds, registration, and so on.

If you provide all the required information along with printing specifications, the printing and scanning service will be able to give you an estimate. This will be the basic cost of the project; the final bill will be based on actual costs incurred. Scanning is charged on a per cm basis, and rescanning or too many corrections are always billed.

There are many kinds of scanners in use: slide scanners which scan transparencies, flatbed scanners which scan anything but have resolutions of 300-400 dpi, drum scanners which are professional scanning devices and do high end scans of 1500 dpi, and more.

Scanning has now become hi-tech and progressed beyond being a pre-press process. Many printing and scan services undertake digitizing of archival documents. Magazines, books, photographs, architectural plans, ledgers, invoices, legal documents, as antique prints and historical documents can be preserved for posterity by scanning. There are three viable options: bi-tonal, used for printed books with line engravings and black and white illustrations; grayscale for hand-written documents, lithographs, and photographs; and color scanning for documents, books, and photographs in four colors. These can then be stored for posterity as microfilm, computer disks, or digital prints.

Once you have identified at least three printing and scanning services, visit each outfit and met the personnel, ask to be shown around their premises, find out what kind of processes they use, see proofs of jobs undertaken by them, and ask for referrals. Be sure to find out how dependable each one is, and whether their rates are competitive.

To get the best service you will need to establish a friendly working relationship with the printing and scanning service and be professional on all countsensure all instructions are clear and all submissions are made according to specifications.

Printing Services provides detailed information on Printing Services, Scanning And Printing Services, Digital Printing Services, Business Card Printing Services and more. Printing Services is affiliated with Check Printing Company.

Student Credit Cards - Are They Important?

Students are often neglected with regards to getting any credit benefits from various lending or credit sources who are otherwise ready to offer credit to businessmen and other working professionals. But the students of today are the next generation and are our future. So its important to encourage and support them with the best available financial and credit opportunities so they can grow in their own fields and provide the best output for our country.

As such, student credit cards provide one mechanism for young people to establish credit as well as provide a financial back stop for education and living expenses while attending school. The cost of living today continues to rise, and the amount of money needed to finance an education, particularly secondary education and college education, is outpacing the rate of inflation by a considerable amount. Many parents cannot bear the entire financial burden of the academic costs for their children. Student credit cards provided by a variety of different banks, lending institutions and credit card companies provide significant opportunities for students to establish and build a credit history at an early age. Provided, of course, that the credit card is used with care and caution.

Choosing a Student Credit Card

Before selecting a student credit card, or all types of credit cards for college students or young people for that matter, most suitable to your needs, you must first carefully read the fine print, otherwise known as the terms and conditions of the offer. As tedious as this might sound, it is very important to fully understand the terms of credit by which you will be bound. These include the applicable interest rates, exclusions, fees, restrictions, penalties as well as any bonus, reward or rebate offer stipulations that the card offer terms and conditions will outline. If you are unsure about any of the details or obligations, be sure to contact the card issuer directly for clarification.

All credit card applicants, especially student credit card applicants, absolutely must be mindful of the terms and conditions of any card offer before filling out and applying for a card offer.

Ideal Choices for Student Credit Cards

The best possible choice for a student is to find a card offer with the lowest available APR. Generally speaking, students are more of a credit risk for credit card issuers so they assign a higher ongoing rate of interest, or APR, on student credit cards to offset the increased risk of default by students. Several student credit card offers provide a 0% APR on purchases and cash advances for the first 6 months of card membership, providing some much needed financing that some students might require for books, school supplies, lab fees, etc. Be aware, however, that the interest rates on these offers jumps up significantly when the introductory offer ends. So be sure to have that card balance paid off by the end of the introductory term.

Appling for a student credit card is very simple and can easily be applied for online, making the prospect of researching and comparing various student credit cards pretty easy.

Is PR Really A “Soft” Discipline?

If so, what is a “hard” discipline? One that involves HUGEmoney or personal pain? One that absorbs all the general counsel’s time? Or, is it the blinding success of a brand new business or, maybe, something that affects individual careers? Or must it simply employ clubs and brass knuckles?

I believe public relations is as “hard” as ANY discipline can get when it puts together for a business, non-profit, government agency or association, the resources and action planning needed to alter individual perception leading to changed behaviors among their most important outside audiences. When it goes on to help managers persuade those key folks to his or her way of thinking, then move them to take actions that allow their department, group, division or subsidiary to succeed, that’s hard, real hard.

Since, plain and simple, that can mean success or failure for the organization, yes, I’d call it a very “hard” discipline indeed!

And that notion isn’t just sitting out there all by itself. Its foundation is the underlying premise of public relationsitself: People act on their own perception of the facts before them, which leads to predictable behaviors about which something can be done. When we create, change or reinforce that opinion by reaching, persuading and moving-to-desired-action the very people whose behaviors affect the organization the most, the public relations mission is usually accomplished.

That’s why many managers are comforted by the thoughtthat the right public relations planning really CAN alter individual perception and lead to changed behaviors among key outside audiences!

Should you be that manager, try to remember that your PR effort must demand more than special events, press releases and brochures if you are to receive the quality public relations results you want.

It will all seem worthwhile when capital givers or specifying sources beginning to look your way; customers begin to make repeat purchases; membership applications start to rise; new proposals for strategic alliances and joint ventures start showing up; politicians and legislators begin looking at you as a key member of the business, non-profit, government or association communities; welcome bounces in show room visits occur; community leaders begin to seek you out, and prospects actually start to do business with you.

Close by are your public relations professionals who can be of real use for your new opinion monitoring project because they are already in the perception and behavior business. But be certain that the PR staff really accepts why it’s SO important to know how your most important outside audiences perceive your operations, products or services. Above all, be sure they believe that perceptions almost always result in behaviors that can help or hurt your operation.

Before you monitor and gather perceptions by questioning members of your most important outside audiences, go over your plans with your PR staff. Rehearse asking questions like these: how much do you know about our organization? Have you had prior contact with us and were you pleased with the interchange? Are you familiar with our services or products and employees? Have you experienced problems with our people or procedures?

Be ready for an epiphany when you discover that usingprofessional survey firms to do the opinion gathering work will cost considerably more than using those PR folks of yours, who already happen to be in the perception monitoring business. However, whether it’s your people or a survey firm asking the questions, the objective remains the same: identify untruths, false assumptions, unfounded rumors, inaccuracies, misconceptions and any other negative perception that might translate into hurtful behaviors.

Goal-setting time has arrived, a goal that calls for action on the most serious problem areas you uncovered during your key audience perception monitoring. Will it be to straighten out that dangerous misconception? Correct that gross inaccuracy? Or, stop that potentially painful rumor cold?

The facts of life say that setting your PR goal requires an equally specific strategy that tells you how to get there. Only three strategic options are available to you when it comes to doing something about perception and opinion. Change existing perception, create perception where there may be none, or reinforce it. The wrong strategy pick will taste like Hollandaise Sauce on your waffles, so be sure your new strategy fits well with your new public relations goal. You certainly don’t want to select “change” when the facts dictate a strategy of reinforcement.

Good writing is always important in public relations, but never more so than now. Here, you’ve got to put together a persuasive message that will help move your key audience to your way of thinking. It must be a carefully-written message targeted directly at your key external audience. Select your very best writer because s/he must come up with corrective language that is not just compelling, persuasive and believable, but clear and factual if it is to shift perception/opinion towards your point of view and wind up with the behaviors you have in mind.

Selecting the communications tactics most likely to carry your message to the attention of your target audience can be a fun chore. There are many available to you. From speeches, facility tours, emails and brochures to consumer briefings, media interviews, newsletters, personal meetings and many others. Take time to assure yourself that the tactics you pick are known to reach folks just like your audience members.

Another reality we labor under in PR is that the credibility of any message is fragile and always suspect to some folks. So the method you use to communicate it is a very valid concern. Which is why you may wish to unveil such a corrective message through smaller presentations and meetings rather than using higher-profile news releases.

Many eventualities can lead you to begin a second perception monitoring session with members of your external audience. But nothing like talk of progress reports. You’ll want to use many of the same questions used in the benchmark session. But now, you will be on strict alert for signs that the bad news perception is being altered in your direction.

Not all programming runs apace, so should momentum flag, you can always move things along by adding more communications tactics as well as increasing their frequencies.

Calling tactical devices tactical devices (like the communications tactics discussed above), avoids confusing them with the broader, more comprehensive mission known as public relations. A mission that we now seeallows managers of all stripes to alter individual perception in a way that leads to changed behaviors among key outside audiences.

A discipline you certainly could call one of the “harder” disciplines insuring the success of any manager’s operation.

Legal Structures

The legal structure of your business is very important as it is a function of liabilities and tax deduction. The most common structures are:

Sole trader
Partnership
Company
Trust

Sole Trader

When you are a sole trader you are personally responsible and liable for the business and its activities. Commonly you may start out as a sole trader, and as you expand, you will need to seek out partners or investors. Your accountant is the best person to advise you if this is the best structure for your business.

Partnership

This arrangement is where you and your partner are liable for anything related to your business. It is a very good idea to get a solicitor to write up a partnership agreement to avoid disputes down the track.

Company

This is a legal entity liable for the debts it incurs and paying tax on income. Your accountant can help you set a company up, or you can buy one off the shelf, which may be more cost effective.

Trust

Depending on your personal circumstances, and the country you live in, trusts can be useful in business and estate planning. They can be quite complex, and again, your accountant is the best person to speak too.

Registering Your Business Name

You can operate a business under your own name or register a business name. Registration of a business name allows you to operate under that name.

Select a name for your business that describes to your customer what you do. A descriptive name promotes and advertises your business more effectively.

Licences And Permits

Depending on your municipality, you may need licences and permits. Do the right thing and check with your local council. Doing the right things now will save you a lot of unnecessary leg work later.

Insurance

Often overlooked, insurance is an important part of your risk management plan. There are two types of insurance: general insurance for loss/damage of assets and risk insurance which is your personal insurance cover.

Ensure your business insurance is separate to your personal insurance.
To establish the type and amount of insurance you need for your home based business, check with an insurance broker.

Managing Risk

You must have a risk management strategy for your business. Your SWOT (Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities, Threats) analysis from article one, will show what could expose your business to loss and what actions to take to reduce that loss.

Marketing

As a home business entrepreneur, you must understand what your customers want and give it to them. You must strive to have a service or product that meets and excels your customers needs and expectations. This is what makes them come back to buy from you, and this is how you grow your profit. Try and think like your customers and you will find they want:

Satisfaction
Value for money
Performance
Reliability
Presentation

Don’t confuse marketing with selling. In a home based business, marketing is much much more and involves all aspects of the business- pricing, advertising, customer service to sales.

Marketing Mix

Communication with your customers is essential and develops the framework for your marketing strategy. You must tell your customers these important bits of information

Product- describe it in full detail, its special features and of course how it will benefit the customer

Price - explain your pricing strategy, don’t forget to consider your costs, discounts you will offer, payment policies

Promotion - choose the most effective for your type of business. If you don’t know, think about what you would prefer if you were the customer. Eg: telemarketing, flyers, e-mail campaigns

Place - what place will your product be so customers can find it and contact you. How will you deliver the product to your customers? You may need to consider getting a website.

Your Business Image

Even though you are running a home based business, make sure your office is comfortable and professional in appearance. Your website also needs to project the same kind of professionalism

Location

Your home based business needs its own dedicated area. Very often the living and working areas muddle into one, not allowing you to distinguish which is for work and for play. Keeping these separate is essential for running a home business. You must ensure that all family members understand this too.
A telephone is essential in your home office as it will be the first point of contact with your clients. Installing a second phone line separate from the personal line is essential along with a cell phone, answering machine and a pager. Talk to your telecommunications company, very often they have some great packages suited to small businesses.

Furniture And Equipment

Choose furniture that is comfortable and professional. This helps distinguish this area from the rest of the household.

Your office needs equipment and here are a few to get you kick started:

Computer
Chair(S)
Desk
Fax machine
Filing cabinet
Mobile phone
Telephone
Heating/cooling
Lighting

I hope this article has set you on the path to create your own home based business and empower you to reach your financial destiny.
In the next article, I will cover some of the ins and outs of operating a small business from home.

Avoid the Stresses of Working from Home

The Stresses of Working from Home.

Good-Bye Commuting And Workplace Pressure. Hello Isolation, Lazy Habits And Confused Kids.

International Stress-Guru Carole Spiers Analyses The Freedom And Slavery Of The Home Working Life for the newsletter INSPIRED! Dedicated to the success of the 500,000 direct sellers in the UK www.directsales-inspiration.com

Many people who are involved in running and growing their own small business will almost certainly be faced with the prospect of working from home. This might be because they’ve started their business as a means of earning money in their spare time; don’t want or need the expense of a serviced or dedicated office; or simply because the nature of their business makes working from home the most logical and cost-effective solution.

Viewing Your Home as an Office - A Big Psychological Shift for You and Your Family Whatever the reason, what many people do not take into account are the stresses and strains that home working can impose. If you have a family, for example, it can be very difficult to make them accept that the area of your home that you have chosen to be your ‘office’ is now exclusively that. Then there is the other extreme where people become so involved in their work that they find it impossible to break away from it, and their work/life balance suffers as a result. And then there are the people who start off with the best of intentions, but find their motivation and commitment to their new business slipping away - making their home feel much less ‘homely’ as a result. In all these situations, the added tensions caused by working from home can very quickly turn into stress which, if left unchecked, can have far-reaching and extremely damaging results. If you are considering or already engaged in home working, it’s therefore important to bear in mind the following. Successful Home workers - the Categories, the Characteristics

Many people enjoy working from home, but for others it can pose problems. It’s been suggested that the ideal balance for home-based workers is to spend between half and one day per week away from their home, but if this is not possible, then it’s essential to keep regular hours and to meet people outside of the home office - hence the development of teleworking ‘communities’ and breakfast / lunch clubs. Those working from home can generally be divided as follows…

* Home workers on fixed contracts, e.g. self-employed sales representatives etc. * People who are building a business, often in direct sales, who may also have a full time job. * Employees who are employed by a company but work from home as opposed to from the firm’s premises. * Self-employed professionals who see clients or offer consultations from home, such as private doctors, counsellors and health therapists. * Freelancers who bring in their own work, such as journalists, graphic designers, authors, researchers etc. …and they tend to be affected by the same issues:

* Isolation and lack of daily peer group interaction - such as meeting around the photocopier or coffee machine for a chat. * A tendency to become de-motivated leading to lack of concentration, low productivity and missed deadlines. It’s been recognised that only individuals possessing a particular temperament may be best suited to home working. Particular strengths include flexibility, self-motivation, good time management, and being a self-starter who is able to work without supervision.

Compensating For The Solo Workstyle - Keep Networking And Socialising

A strong network of supportive friends is also thought to be beneficial, if not essential, in retaining good mental health. Where people miss the stimulus of interpersonal relationships, over time they may become depressed and withdrawn. Colleagues at work not only spend a substantial amount of time talking to each other about their work, but also such topics as their social lives, families, TV etc. This frequent interpersonal contact, sense of belonging and mutual concern is fundamental to human needs, but can very often be missing when an individual works from home. Company employees who use their home as an office should therefore be aware that this will require a change in outlook, including: * A clear understanding of the overall objectives of the (now virtual) team of which they are a member. * A clear definition of their responsibilities, role and place in the hierarchical order of the department or company. * Periodic face-to-face personal contact in order to minimise social isolation. Freelancers and the self-employed, on the other hand, will benefit from: * Joining professional organisations, e.g. a local Chamber of Commerce, professional society or business group. * Being proactive in initiating co-operative alliances and mutual ventures. * Arranging meetings to maintain contact with colleagues and clients, e.g. breakfast or lunch clubs. Overall, the temperament and skills required to be a good home worker should include the following characteristics: * Commitment to the job. * Not easily distracted. * Good time management. * Self-discipline. * Ability to communicate well by phone, email, fax and letter. * Ability to network. * Flexible attitude to working hours. * Willingness to be adaptable

What Home-Tutor Annie Found When She Made The Leap Awkward highs and lows. A sense of isolation. Friends taking liberties with her ‘freedom’. But she soon got things under control…

Annie returned to work after her divorce, when her children were in full-time education. She re-trained for a year, studied for a degree, and then worked from home as a self-employed home tutor. Initially she used the family sitting room but soon found the intrusion into living space to be difficult. Eventually she moved, and one of her requirements for the new home was a self-contained space situated near the front door that could be utilised as an office, in order that clients did not have to walk through the living area of the house. After the stimulus of university, Annie found it difficult to accept that on many days the only people she communicated with were her clients. She missed the interaction of university life. She also found it difficult to motivate herself sufficiently to keep records up-to-date, block out lessons, read new material and market herself by phoning potential clients. Another irritant was that friends and neighbours tended to take advantage of her and appeared not to take her work seriously - e.g. by asking her to pick their children up from school if arrangements fell through, or to let in building contractors etc. On days when there was no work for her to do, it could be difficult for Annie to motivate herself to get out of bed, whereas at other times of the year, especially close to exams, the workload could be extreme. As a self-employed worker, it was difficult to turn down work and therefore very easy for Annie to over-extend herself. By contrast, other periods were unbearably quiet and it could be difficult to cope with the lack of control over her workload. Annie eventually joined a gym to ensure that she went out regularly and because she enjoyed the sociability of the class. She could go during the day, rather than being restricted to weekends when the gym was busier, and so she benefited from a cheaper off-peak rate. Annie found it important to keep in contact with friends regularly, although this resulted in higher expenditure on meals, cinema, etc. On the whole Annie enjoyed her new lifestyle and the freedom to plan each day. Initially she found it difficult to cope with the highs and lows of work but this became easier as a pattern began to emerge. As a home worker, it was important for her not to become isolated and to accept that she had to make an effort to go out and meet people. She joined a professional association and often travelled to London to attend lectures. This helped her to network on both a professional and private basis, as well as keeping her up-to-date with the new information that was essential to her work and professional discipline.

The Meaning of Life - Brilliant White Teeth?

If you have ever seen the Monty Python film The Meaning of Life, you may recall a scene toward the end in which the late Graham Chapman played the role of a heavenly lounge singer with a blindingly white smile - so white, in fact that it looked comical (which of course was the point).

In fact, no human (or any other mammal) has perfectly white teeth. Even the color we call “ivory white” - the color of an elephant or walrus tusk - is a somewhat “warmer” shade than the color of snow. Nonetheless, darkened, stained teeth are not particularly attractive or healthy looking.

Also known as teeth bleaching, “whitening” is perhaps the most popular, least expensive and most commonly performed procedure in the field of cosmetic dentistry. Natural teeth are never pure white, and would look unnatural in any event. However, there are several factors that can cause teeth to become stained over time, even for those who are very conscientious about dental hygiene. Tobacco use, consumption of tea and/or coffee, prescription drugs such as tetracycline and even illness can cause the best-kept teeth to turn yellow, brown or even blue. The objective of tooth whitening is not to make a person’s teeth the brilliant white color of snow or talcum powder, but simply to restore the teeth to their natural healthy color.

There are many “over-the-counter” (OTC) products available for those who want to attempt this type of cosmetic dentistry at home one their own. However, the American Dental Association does not recommend these, and if you choose to use one, you do so only under the advice of a licensed dental professional. One of the problems with these OTC (aside from their dubious effectiveness) is that the tray used for the application of the bleaching agent (which is usually hydrogen peroxide) is a “one-size-fits-all” proposition - meaning it is unlikely to fit anyone’s particular mouth well and can cause a great deal of discomfort.

On the other hand, your cosmetic dentistry professional will create a tray that is custom made for your teeth and follow a procedure that will address the specific cause of your tooth discoloration.
