For you to succeed, you have to identify and understand what you or your business does or can start doing for your prospects and customers that provides them with a result that is superior to the competition’s. This is called your unique selling proposition (USP). Your unique selling proposition is the distinct advantage or benefit that sets your business apart from the competition.

Your unique selling proposition can be quality, service, speed, convenience, experience, low prices, selection, or any other attribute you want your company to be known for. The important thing to remember is that before you can get a greater share of the market, you first have to get a greater share of your prospect’s mind. And you can do this by selecting and developing a unique selling proposition.

Your unique selling proposition should be one that is a natural benefit offered by your business. Never offer a USP that is false. For example, if you are a high-priced consultant or run a high-line retail store, you shouldn’t consider lower prices as your unique selling proposition.

All of your marketing should create a deeper connection between your company and your unique selling proposition. For example, you can choose quality as your USP, while still promoting your service and location. But you’ve got to communicate the idea of quality in all your marketing, from your sales presentations to your direct mail letters, from your advertising to your Web site. When your prospects think of your company, they should think of quality. And make sure you consistently deliver quality in everything you sell and do.

If you don’t offer a clear and meaningful unique selling proposition, you’re business will stand for nothing. For example, if a business just offers a convenient location, why should they get much patronage if they fail to offer any appealing promise, unique benefit, or special service? Customers expect to be treated with special regard in exchange for their business.

Successful companies study their market looking for unoccupied niches. That’s why they own a large part of the respective market. These companies realize that many products and service categories are vulnerable in areas that no one has filled. So they fill and claim the niche for themselves. And they do whatever is necessary to live up to their unique selling propostion.

The small number of businesses that actually develop and incorporate a unique selling proposition always own a larger share of the market then those without one. By developing a unique selling proposition and incorporating it into every aspect of your business you’ll have a major advantage over your competition.

I now consider myself an experienced writer of letters of recommendation. Now, this is not something that would appear on any business card (assuming I had business cards), nor is it something that is printed on the shirts available for purchase in the mall (unless I made my own shirt, or my own mall). But for the past few years, I’ve found myself writing many letters to many different colleges and not necessarily having the fun I could be having if I wrote “the letter.” That’s right, a letter so grand that it deserves to be in quotations. Not because of how flattering it is in regards to the student, but because it’s the exact opposite. And now I have decided to give myself the opportunity to fulfill my wish…

Recommendation for John P. Idiot

In my years of teaching, never has a student touched me so much as John P. Idiot. Even when I tell him that I do not want his hands on me, or anywhere close, he still touches me. Until someone else walks into the room, in which case he will touch that person instead.

But it’s not John’s ability to touch people that has earned him his primary reputation at our school. Even more notable is his title as the person who has asked out the most girls and subsequently been turned down the most. While this might not seem relevant to a college recommendation at first thought, I believe it shows that he is able to overcome adversity again and again and again and again and still isn’t a changed person as a result. And that’s unfortunate because there is much to be changed about John. I don’t mean that in a negative way, of course. It is just that John has more issues than a standard newspaper archive, and maybe only two or three less than a fenceless zoo.

Aside from being able to see John develop as a person (probably more than I would have liked, thanks to a mooning incident), I’ve also had the opportunity to see John develop as a scholar. When he handed in his first essay during his sophomore year, for example, it wasn’t very good. In fact, it was the worst essay I’ve ever read, real or fictional. But his next essay a couple of weeks later was one of the best in the class. In fact, the words jumped off of the page like basketball players, and the message shot out like it was in a bottle for many years. And while I later found this exact essay on the Internet, this plagiarism doesn’t take away from the fact that John was able to identify a good essay and steal it accordingly. I can’t say the same for other students, who would rather have their mothers do their work. John would never ask his parents for help, at least not after that incident with the ammonia and the match a few months ago. But that’s not important to this evaluation.

What’s truly important is that John was a stellar classroom participant. There were times when students were in the middle of a great discussion about a novel, and John would chime in, “I need to go to the bathroom.” While this completely ruined the momentum of the conversation, it showed me that John knows what he wants, and is able to identify these needs when the time arises. I noticed that when John came back, usually 15 minutes later and smelling of smoke, he seemed content in the sense that he had accomplished his goal, which is important in our goal-oriented society. Another example of his ability to achieve his goals is when I heard him proclaim, “Oh my gosh, I am totally going to fail this test” and he did exactly that.

Outside of the classroom, John is known for his involvement in extra-curricular activities, none of which should be mentioned in this letter, although they do reveal him as both a leader and a “people person.” He also attends most school functions, and will always come back into the building when he is kicked out.

In summary, John will have a major impact on your college next year if you only give him the opportunity to do so. As your college is located many miles away from where I teach, I believe it is an ideal fit for him.

Trashing plays an important role in maintaining a high level appearance in an office building. Indeed, one of the first things a visitor to an office will notice is a full or overflowing trash can. Full cans can become a fire hazard and overflowing materials are a common cause of accidents, such as falls. Waste baskets can also contain partially eaten sandwiches, half empty soda cans and other materials that can cause infection or foul odors. Prompt removal of waste material and cleaning of the cans will help to eliminate these problems.

For prompt and efficient trash removal, make sure you have the proper equipment: A brute, large sized liners (45 to 60 gallon) for the brute; medium (20 to 30 gallon) and small (10 to 15 gallon) liners for the trash cans you are emptying; and cloth and disinfectant so you can clean any cans that need it.

Before beginning, make sure you know where to start and where to finish. The easiest and most effective path should be chosen. It is generally best to proceed in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction as you work your way around the room. Empty trash cans, pencil sharpeners and pick up obvious waste on the floor as you work your way around the room.

Push the brute as close to the trash can as possible. This will also save time. When bending to pick up the trash can, pick up any litter around it. Then to actually empty the can, turn it over and as far down inside the brute as possible. This will reduce flying dust, ashes or small bits of paper. Hold the can in one hand and to dislodge any stuck papers, tap it on the side or bottom with your hand.

Before returning the can to its place, check to see if there are spots on the can and wipe it down if necessary. If you see or smell food products change the can’s liner. Place an extra liner in the bottom of the trash can, then put the fresh liner in the can and tie a knot in one end of the liner so it fits tightly over the can. Always return the can to its previous location.

Do not over fill the brute. Tie it with a knot when it is two-thirds full. Dispose of the filled liners in the provided dumpsters or set outside the door for later removal. If you must leave filled trash bags inside until they can be taken out to the dumpster, put them on a tarp to protect the flooring.

If you suspect an item has been accidentally tossed into a trash can and not meant for removal, remove the item and leave a note asking if it is indeed trash. Any boxes in rooms or halls should not be removed unless they are marked as trash. It is always better to be safe than sorry!
