Gourmet: A Defining Moment

Do you remember the first time you had a “gourmet” delicacy? I do. I was having dinner in a restaurant of supreme quality and reputation, and I ordered the escargot. It was the most wonderful entr©e I have ever had the pleasure of consuming. The food there was delicious and prepared with individuality. Therein is the chief ingredient for gourmet. The definition of gourmet is a person devoted to refined sensuous enjoyment, especially good food and drink. That is the discriminating difference between McDonald’s and Savoy’s. Food production for the masses is a necessity. But it eliminates the wonderful, sensual, enjoyment to be had in the consumption of a gourmet meal.

Having operated a restaurant for several years, I can vouch for the truth in the discriminating taste of the public. Everyone would like a gourmet meal on a shoestring budget. It is just not a possibility. If you’re going to ask for sensual enjoyment, you’re going to have to pay for that privilege. It’s not cheap food. It was not intended to be. Gourmet food is prepared with the individual tastes and talents of a trained chef. The use of only fresh, high, quality ingredients is a must, and strict adherence to the chef’s preferred seasonings required. Given all this special attention, one must assume the price to be more than $2.95. But then, I ask you, if it’s gourmet, is price not irrelevant?

Occasionally, we must throw aside our frugal tendencies, and simply take a moment to enjoy the fruits of our labor. The gourmet inside us all needs an opportunity now and then to experience a rare bottle of wine, the finest liver pate, or the gourmet chocolate of Godiva. That’s the wonderful thing about gourmet. It’s very subjective. Your tastes are not mine.

There are some basics about gourmet that remain no matter what the taste of the chef or the customer. It isn’t gourmet if it isn’t made with quality ingredients, attention to detail, individuality, and seasonings and flavors that bring unique richness to the food. To simply include the words exotic, specialty, or rare does not make food gourmet. The experience of real gourmet is much bigger than just fancy words.

Many gourmet chefs and cooks have been apprenticed or educated formally for several years. They have degrees in how to uniquely prepare your food. Or maybe the term gourmet is applied because the preparations and process have been so refined as to be considered expert in the field. This is the case with certain wine makers. The wine is considered gourmet because of the unique sensations and taste of the wine on the taster’s pallet. It is beyond compare. Many gourmet chefs buy only locally grown foods. In doing so, they are adding to the uniqueness of the experience.

So, as you can see, gourmet is not just a description. It is truly an experience to be enjoyed by young and old, rich and poor. Take a moment, set aside the budget and allow yourself the extreme pleasure of a gourmet meal. Ah….. the pleasures of life!

A Brief History On Cells Phones

The concept of the cell phone was created in the late 1940’s.
Scientists concluded that with small cells with frequency reuse
they could create such a thing as a mobile phone. The technology
that existed at this time however meant that this was
impossible. The Bell corporation is responsible for the concept
of the mobile
phone, but only for use in cars. The first inventor of a
portable cell phone is considered to be Dr. Martin Cooper who
made his first cell phone call in 1973. He made his call to his
rivals at Bell who were closely competing with him to win the
cellular technology race.

In 1977 the model cell phone was created and given to over
2000 trial costumers. Tests continued on cell phones throughout
the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. In 1982 cell phones were
finally approved for public use in the United States. The cell
phone became in great demand among consumers and by 1987 the
airways were filled with cell phone frequencies. Since the FCC
refused to allow the cell phone industry have any more
bandwidth, cell phone companies
began expanding and improving their technology. Today, cell
phones are found in virtually every household and many people
could not imagine life without them. We now have phones that
include gimmicks such as camera phones, phones that download
music, video camera phones and text messaging. The cell phone
services have come along way since the idea was thought of in
1947, and we have Dr. Martin Cooper and Joel Engel to thank.

Take Your Fashion Statement To The Beach

It’s that time of year when we pack up our bags and head to the
beach for the day to enjoy those warm sunrays and the refreshing
sound of the lapping water.

So what constitutes a good beach wardrobe. Well there are
certain essentials that none of us forget. On goes the swimsuit
and bathing suit cover, flip flops on our feet. Beach bag has
been packed with the essentials - sunglasses, floppy hat, towel
and a good book. Great - got the basics covered but what about
the rest.

So if we are so prepared for a day at the beach, why is it by
the time we get home we look pretty worn. Here are some helpful
tips to make your day at the beach fun and keep you looking
fashion fresh all day and all the way home.

First before you leave home, if you’ve got long hair pull it
into a high pony tail or fun knot. Use some funky hair
accessories that will stay in place when you’re swimming. Try a
fun colored bobble or some firm fastening clips in bright summer
colors. If you pull your hair up your neck will stay cool and
you’ll look fresh all day with your neat hairdo.

Second slather yourself in sunscreen before leaving the house,
then toss the sunscreen in your bag so you can reapply after a
swim or every few hours. A sunburn is not only unhealthy and
painful, it’s unattractive, so don’t let yourself turn into the
lobster of the day. Your sunscreen should be a SPF of 15. It
doesn’t hurt to use a strong SPF on your face or your entire
body if you burn easily.

Your beach bag should be large enough to hold your supplies for
the day. Why not get something fun and fashionable to keep you
looking fashion fresh. Make sure you’ve got all the daily
essentials in your bag - sunglasses, sunscreen, a good book, a
floppy hat, some lip gloss, and any other makeup touch ups
you’ll want. If you plan to wear eye makeup make sure it’s
waterproof. Stay away from heavy foundations.

If you must apply something use a bronzer moisturizer. It’s also
a good idea to bring lip balm with an SPF15 to protect your
lips. It never hurts to put some moisturizer in the bag. Include
a snack and plenty of fluids. It’s important not to get
dehydrated.

Okay great we’ve got the basics covered now what about the
wardrobe basics? If you’re planning to wear a swimsuit it’s
usually easiest to put it on at home, that way you’re not
chasing down change rooms. So great - first on goes the
swimsuit. Now what to wear for a cover?

Well you’ve got plenty of choices. A tank top and shorts, tank
and skort, or a nice light cotton dress all work well over top.
Choose something that’s easy to put on and take off, and choose
fabrics that breathe to keep you cool. I also suggest including
a long sleeved cotton blouse just incase you start to burn you
can protect your shoulders and arms.

If you’re planning on heading out later in the day without
returning home you might want to toss a pair of jeans or long
skirt into your bag. If your outing is going to extend into the
evening you’ll want to include a sweater for the cooler evening
air.

If you’re worried about your evening wear getting sandy or wet
at the beach, then place them in a separate bag and leave them
in the trunk of your car. That way you are guaranteed they’ll
remain fresh.

My favorite beach look is this. And what’s perfect is it keeps
me looking fashion fresh throughout the day and takes me right
into the evening. First I like a swimsuit that’s got lots of
support and is bright and cheerful. I throw a fitted tank on top
and throw on a loose flouncy long skirt. The long skirt serves
me through the evening and also works great to cover up if I’m
starting to burn. I choose a lightweight material in a darker
color with a pattern that accents the colors in my swimsuit.
Flip flops are my footwear.

Depending on where I’m heading after the beach I choose either a
basic pair or one of my funky pair with rhinestones or crystals.
Easy to walk in, feet breath, and terrific for an evening out. I
keep a fitted light weight sweater in my car, and take a long
sleeved cotton blouse down to the beach. I usually choose a long
sleeved and long length blouse because it’s versatile. I can
knot it to create a short blouse, wear it long as a beach cover,
and put it on if I start to burn on my upper body.

I usually choose white or a soft pastel depending on my other
colors. I like white because it’s cool to wear and refreshing to
look at. Every year I buy a fun new beach tote that’s big enough
for the beach but not too big as to take it with me for an
evening out. I like a fun bag that’s full of character.

Since I always feel naked without my jewelry I wear fashion
jewelry to the beach. That way should I loose something I won’t
be out a lot of money and I won’t feel so bad. I like to keep
the earrings simple and elegant. I may or may not wear a
necklace.

Often I’ll toss a funky wood necklace in the bag to add to the
evening outfit. I like to wear a couple of fashion rings just to
add the finishing touches. Now if you’re fussy about tan lines
you’ll probably want to forgo the rings. I toss my watch in the
bottom of my bag so I can put it on later.

That’s it - simple is the key. Keep your beach wardrobe choices
simple but fashionable. Think ahead so you can go from beach to
an evening out without hassle. Remember to always make your
fashion statement!

Land Grab Law LRAU in Spain

Much has been written in the press about the Land Grab Law or L.R.A.U - Ley
Reguladora de la Actividad Urbanstica, where people have fallen foul of the greed of
developers who have abused this, well meaning regulation brought in by the
Valencian government to provide low cost social housing and infrastructure
improvements. Although introduced in 1994, it is only in the recent few years that
unscrupulous developers have taken advantage of the complex wording of the
L.R.A.U. and distorted its meaning to their own gains - to forcibly obtain land either
without compensation or at well below market value prices and then inflict hugely
inflated charges on innocent foreign country house owners for ‘contributions to the
improvement of infrastructure’.

Only applicable to the Valencian Community, the L.R.A.U. has been a thorn in the
side of many estate agencies trying to encourage investors to the area, as people
have been falsely led to believe that all properties can be affected by this law.
On the positive side, the risk of getting caught up in this law can be minimised in
many ways. Using a solicitor specialised in this area can safeguard your investment
and make the buying of a property in this region a safe investment. One must
always seek legal advice before buying any property, and a good solicitor will do the
appropriate searches and background work to ensure that your investment is safe.

What can your solicitor do for you?

Your solicitor will find out about the planning status and in particular, the
classification of the land you are planning on buying. Land is classified in three
types - urban, non-urban and developable.

Urban - Buying a property on urban land can be more expensive, but it is totally
free from risks as all of the planning has already been done for the area and is
unlikely to change dramatically to effect your investment.

Non-Urban Land - property situated on non-urban land is safer than developable
land as there cannot be any urbanisation or improvement plans. However, there is a
small risk that the land can be reclassified to developable at a later date, especially
if this non-urban land is near urban or developable areas. A solicitor can tell you
before buying a property if any future plans exist for the reclassification of the area.

Developable Land - Property on developable land, which has not had infrastructure
installed is liable to attract costs at a later date. Your solicitor can help by getting a
planning certificate from the local town hall (ayuntamiento) assuring that there is no
development planned for the future and that they must notify you of any such
change or discovery of plans.

Fortunately, after much canvassing, the European Courts has taken notice of this
loophole in the L.R.A.U. and are now taking steps to ensure that no one else is
victimised by these cowboys.

Well, It Worked for Me

The other day, someone was giving me some unsolicited advice. He was telling me that in order to grow my business, I needed to change the way I dress. He said that instead of dressing like a professional, I needed to dress in gypsy-like clothing. “That way,” he said, “people will be more inclined to remember you. I know it works because that’s the way I do it.”

Thanks, but no thanks. I told him that while I was glad that dressing in gypsy-like clothing worked for him and his audience, that wouldn’t work for me because I do not feel comfortable in that kind of clothing. I feel more comfortable dressed in professional clothing. He insisted and told me to just do it. He said, “Don’t worry. You’ll get used to it.”

Now, that’s exactly what I need - someone to dress me. Hey, why don’t I just give up complete control and give this guy the reins since he knows what’s best for me? People like that get on my nerves. If I want your advice, I will ask for it. Just like if you want my advice, you will ask for it.

The point here is that we need to be more sensitive with our advice-giving. People pay me to coach, teach, and consult with them when they are interested in growing in consciousness. This is what I do and I do it very well. It is the only time that I will give advice. Basically, what I’m saying is that anyone wanting my advice has to pay me for it. Otherwise, I won’t give it because of sensitivity issues.

We all need to take a step back and look at why and how often we give unsolicited advice. Are we giving it because it works for us or because we truly think it’s in the best interest of the other party? Most often, we give it because it works for us. This is the exact reason we shouldn’t give it. What works for me works for me; what works for you works for you. We have different lives with different experiences and different belief systems. There is no way that every solution that works for me will also work for you. We are too different.

I try to keep this in mind every time I feel like I know the answer to someone else’s problems. My mind chatter may insist on giving unsolicited advice, but my controlled self-talk knows better. What works for me may not work for the other person so I keep it to myself.

My challenge to you is to start paying attention to when you give unsolicited advice. Is it because it worked for you? Does the other person accept it? Start gauging how this works for you. In the meantime, I’ll stick with my professional clothing.

Non-Profits: Successful Online Strategies

More and more non-profit organizations are developing websites to help share information about their mission and programs. This involves strategic planning about the best way to present your image and message online. Once your site is up, your organization also has to be ready to keep information current and to maintain consistent outreach activities. If your group is planning a Web site, consider:

1. How does your organization plan to use your site? Is it for marketing your organization, raising funds, providing information, announcing events, attracting volunteers, starting a discussion group, or something else? Answering this question will help you to develop a site that best suits your group’s needs.

2. Who is your group trying to reach? Think strategically about the audience you are trying to target. Are they current or potential clients? Are they donors? Volunteers? A particular group in the community? Tailor your website to speak to that audience.

3. What information do you want to include? Some of the components you can incorporate on your site include: your mission, a list of programs and goals, contact information (staff list, e-mail addresses, mailing address, phone and fax numbers, and directions to your organization), list of special events and dates, organizational history, links to other websites, volunteer opportunities, and press releases.

4. If your NPO wants to engage in online fundraising (and you should!), then carefully consider the following: How will online giving be managed internally? What online forms will you use to gather donor information? How will you ensure security for donor information and credit cards? What offline options will donors have who do not want to give online? Which giving options will be included on the site (ex: planned giving, current campaigns, future projects, etc.)?

Once you’ve decided on your content, speak to a web designer about the “look” of the piece. The impression that you give offline should be carried into your online presence. Your website is an important tool to reinforce your identity, image, and credibility. In addition to text, you can include full-color photography, your logo, and graphic images. Keep the copy simple and include interesting visual images that show the work you are doing in the community and the audiences you serve.

Marketing your site is as important as designing it. There are many ways to promote your website, both online and offline. Most people who visit your site learn about it from printed material, not from looking it up on a search engine.

For offline marketing, add your URL address to business cards, stationery, newsletters, brochures, fax cover sheets, and so on. List your website on any materials that you hand out at conferences, seminars, and workshops. Put it next to your organization’s mailing address and phone number. Send out a card or letter to announce the launch of your site and include an article about it in your newsletter. Send press releases to the local newspapers and to professional publications announcing your website. Make sure that your staff, Board, and volunteers know the site address and can discuss the content.

Online, you can register your home page with Web announce sites, directories, and search engines. Send e-mails to other related websites asking for a link. Send an e-mail to your clients, donors, partner organizations, and volunteers with a link to your URL address. Have staff and board members include this link at the end of the e-mails they send. Announce your site on relevant Internet newsgroups and lists - if you participate in these groups on a regular basis, you will help build an online reputation for your organization.

Another important online marketing strategy for non-profits is to list your organization with Internet charity portals. These websites offer a directory of non-profit organizations. Charity portals include CharityNavigator.com, GreaterGood.com, FreeDonation.com, NetworkForGood.org, 4charity.com, and WorkingForChange. Donors often peruse these sites to help them with their research, so it’s important to keep your listing up to date.

Internet marketing is a never-ending process. It requires a commitment to send out regular e-mails, keep your site information timely and accurate, update your staff on the latest Internet technologies, and learn about other Internet resources that can benefit your staff and clients. There are countless ways to use your website to bring in and send out new information. As you learn more, you can also use your website as a means to recruit volunteers, raise funds for your current campaign, and encourage activism.

The Advantages of Wooden Wine Racks

Wood wine racks provide the best storage system for a large collection, cheaply and efficiently. They are easy to assemble, study, stackable, attractive and cost between $30 and $130. You can easily purchase more cubes as your collection expands. Ask for a discount if you buy more than one cube.

Wooden wine racks can also double as table tops to hold all your wine accessories. Pine wine racks are the cheapest. Tabletop wine racks tend to hold 24, 36, or 48 bottles and cost between $50 and $100.

Many high-quality wooden wine racks can be used as furniture. Mahogany, redwood, and oak wine bars elegantly store your wines while giving you space to serve them in style. Most bars cost around $500 and can hold 50 to 100 bottles. If you buy online, shipping will cost around $100, so keep an eye out for free shipping deals. Wooden wine towers let you keep your wine organized and store glasses on shelves. They are ideal for tight spaces and may cost over $300, depending on quality.

If your wine collection is an investment, consider buying a wooden wine rack in a freestanding refrigerator. These keep your wines in a climate-controlled container, so you can display your wines in any environment. Expect to pay around $2,000.

How you store wine, however, is not as important as where you store wine. Any wine rack — whether it is wood or metal, large or small — should be kept in a cool, dark, slightly humid area. Keep a consistent temperature between 50 and 59 degrees Fahrenheit. Never put the wine rack in the sun or heat, which will cook and spoil the wine. Basements and closets make excellent storage spaces. Also keep a record of your wines so you know when to open a perfectly aged bottle.

How To Start Your Own Virtual Assistant Business

Thanks to the Internet there’s a new way to make money with your
computer. You might be surprised at all the different services
you could offer with this new home business. Most people have
become familiar with word processors, which usually consists of
typing manuscripts, letters, transcription and writing resumes,
but the new virtual assistant is like word processing on
steroids.

Diana Ennen, has been a home-based word processor now for about
15 years. She started to educate herself about all the
possibilities a person has when starting a virtual assistant
business. Diana Ennen along with Kelly Poelker, a certified
Master Virtual Assistant, just finished writing an ebook called,
“A Bizy’s Guide: How To Start Your Own Home-Based Virtual
Assistant’s Business.”

So What Exactly Is A Virtual Assistant?

Diana Ennen explains, “A virtual assistant, or VA, is a highly
skilled professional who provides administrative support and
other specialized services to businesses, entrepreneurs,
executives, and others who have more work to do than time to do
it.

Many VAs work as independent contractors from their own home.
VAs use leading edge technology to communicate work assignments
via the Internet, e-mail, disk transfer or such traditional
methods as regular mail, overnight shipping and even pick-up and
delivery in local areas. A VAs services typically include word
processing, medical or legal transcription, database management,
Internet research, e-mail handling, reminder service, bulk
mailings, information processing, and any other tasks typically
given to the office secretary. Many VAs also provide web
development, design and maintenance, desktop publishing, meeting
and event planning, bookkeeping, and business start-up
consultations. The services are endless depending upon your
knowledge and skills.”

Tisha Silvers explains her virtual assistant business as, “One
who assists another from literally anywhere in the world. I
don’t limit it to just business support functions. And I
consider the person a few miles down the street to be just as
virtual if you don’t meet regularly or at all. I have a few of
those kinds of clients myself.”

How Can You Market This Business?

Showing clients how much you can help them as their VA isn’t as
hard as you think. Julie McMann explains, “Using a virtual
assistant allows clients to outsource any projects that can be
done from a remote location. It allows them to accomplish more
with less time. Since time is so precious to business owners,
anything that frees up time and keeps the business moving ahead
is extremely valuable. It’s also convenient to be able to hire
and utilize a virtual assistant whenever you need them. One
month you may have more projects than another. It’s much less
expensive than hiring a full-time employee who doesn’t get used
to their full potential. Clients also benefit by not having to
worry about providing employee benefits such as insurance, 401K,
vacations, etc. Finally, office space and equipment are provided
at the expense of the virtual assistant, which again saves the
client money.”

Do You Have What It Takes To Become A Successful VA?

Here are some questions to ask yourself when you think about
starting your own virtual assistant business:

Do you have excellent typing and proofing skills? Do you
enjoy helping people? Are you familiar with the Internet and
enjoy learning new things about it? Do you already know
several people who could utilize your services? Are you
capable of making a great income and will stop at nothing to
make it happen?

SKILLS NEEDED

Diana and Kelly explain, “Every virtual assistant has their own
unique skills and experience that enables them to start their
business. The right skills are those that you have perfected and
can perform well. As you further develop your skills, you can
expand your service offering.

Skills range from the basics such as typing to highly
specialized areas like web design, graphic arts, technical
writing, and more. A professional VA will be proficient in the
Internet, computers, software, word processing and spreadsheet
applications, etc. In addition to the technical skills, a
professional VA will have good business management skills as
well as knowledge of marketing, advertising, and public
relations. Business management skills not only help you in
operating your own business, but allows you to aid your clients
in running theirs.

VAs must be motivated. You can’t get discouraged when you
experience minor set-backs. Start fresh each day. If the phone
didn’t ring yesterday, make it ring today. Failure is not an
option. You need to know that you’re going to make it and will
stop at nothing short.”

How Much Can You Make?

“Our research shows most pricing is centered around a base
price of $25 per hour. However, the rate does depend on the
services you provide and also how long you’ve been in business.
Another consideration is the area in which you live. In some
areas you will receive more than in others. For example, in
south Florida you can charge a better rate in Miami, than say a
smaller town like Pompano Beach.

There are different ways in which you can charge for services.
By the hour, by the project, by the page, or for something like
event planning you could charge a certain percentage of the
total event cost. Many VAs offer reduced rates for a monthly
retainer option. With a monthly retainer your client commits to
a certain number of hours per month at a predetermined rate. If
you work less than the committed number of hours you are still
paid the same. If you work over the committed number of hours
then you would bill the client for the additional hours at that
same rate or whatever is agreed upon,” says Diana and Kelly.

Food for Energy and Growth

Our bodies use food for energy and growth which is a problem when you have signs of diabetes as the condition stops this from happening properly. We must all have glucose to provide us with sufficient energy to carry out everyday tasks. Glucose is the main source of fuel for the body but diabetes causes glucose to back up in the bloodstream. As more and more glucose remains in the bloodstream blood glucose or blood sugar levels can rise too high.

Information in this article is regarding the two major types of the condition. Mainly affecting children and young adults, type 1 or juvenile onset diabetes occurs when insulin production stops completely; daily injections of insulin are needed if the diabetic patient does not want to die. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that enables the body to use glucose to produce energy as it gets sugar into the cells. Type 2 is also called adult onset or non-insulin dependent diabetes; the body is still producing insulin but there is a problem with its production or use, but fortunately this type can be treated with a special diet.

Our body needs energy which it obtains from food that it converts into sugar like bread, potatoes, rice and pasta etc. Prolonged periods of high blood glucose levels can lead to problems like heart disease, kidney complaints, blindness and even limb amputations. Specialists in diabetes will tell you that provided you do exactly what your care and management program tells you to do, your condition will start to improve; some of the possible conditions will be halted completely whilst others will be delayed. To manage your condition well, ensure you take your medication; this means maintaining the correct level of blood sugar, cholesterol and blood fat along with giving up cigarettes.

You will also need to maintain your weight, and maintain your blood pressure to within the guidelines set by your doctor. Diabetes cannot be cured and once diagnosed it is a lifelong complaint; the USA is particularly badly hit with over 5.5 million sufferers. Studies suggest that it is not the whole story as experts believe there are as many people again that have the disease that have not yet been diagnosed; over 600,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. The number of Americans who have diabetes and die each year is approximately 320,000 but only 34,000 die as a direct result of having the condition.
